The Shadow’s Edge (2025) is released in the UK and Ireland from today.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Spoiler-Free

The veteran part of the article title is self-explanatory. Jackie Chan at the age of 71 and Tony Leung Ka-Fai, overshadow their youth counterparts with their evergreen screen presence and awe-inspiring kinetic energy.

Jackie plays a retired surveillance officer, Wong, who is tasked at tracking down a criminal later discovered to be nicknamed, The Shadow.

Both Wong and Fu (Shadow), play parental figures. Wong has an adopted father role to He, a female officer whose father’s demise Wong shares responsibility for. Fu is the literal adopted father to an entourage of 5 orphans whom he had taken under his wing.

Needless to say, the Shadow takes a heavy handed approach to parenthood and teaches his sons a purely self-preserving philosophy of devouring everything that stands in the way of material abundance.

Now the Face-off. Akin to the John Woo classic, disguises and face masks play a significant role in the Catch Me if You Can (2002) chases that dictates the film’s tempo. Literally, the film is a series of interconnected confrontations that spiral in and out in a Mexican wave of Mexican standoffs, all whilst the game is just about the kick-off.

Old Vs New

Human Vs AI

Snake Vs Wolf

Cryptocurrencies being the central prize of the ‘heist’ is particularly interesting in the context of nearby Hong Kong attempting to position itself as token marketplace whilst facing resistance from the mainland. In a way, this tension between the emphasis on prudence and the urgency of the youth is the core face-off being discussed. Director Yang seems to have made up his mind on a middle ground with the master-disciple relationship being an outlet to ease this friction.

Interestingly, while the storyline feels like a convergence between Infernal Affairs (2002), Point Break (1991), and Eye In The Sky (2007), upon reflection the film has a comical parallel to Death Note (yes, the anime). If you entertain this thought experiment, I assure you that this will be an even more cathartic experience!

The cast includes Zhang Zifeng (AftershockUpcoming) as a female officer, together with Ci Sha (Creation of the GodsShe’s Got No Name), Zac Wang (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsThe Karate Kid), and Jun (Wen Junhui) from the K-pop group Seventeen. You can expect to hear gasps from the audience as Wen’s character is introduced.

As of writing, there is ongoing talks of a sequel, and given the success of the film, this is almost but guaranteed to be green-lit. I highly recommend The Shadow’s Edge for lovers of Jackie Chan, Tony Leung Ka Fai and the feel of an updated mid 2000s Hong Kong mêlée.
